The "Hero" Content Strategy That's Helped Me Cut Time Spent on Content Creation in HALF

Apr 20, 2022

Tell me if this sounds familiar ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡

At the start of your social media journey, you had SO much energy for content creation.

You were ready to show up every day online with a positive attitude, eager to serve your community. โญ โญ โญ

But after a while, you’re not as bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as you used to be.

The content creation grind has started to weigh on you. ๐Ÿ˜ซ

And you no longer have it in you to show up every day with fresh and creative content ideas.

I’ve been there.

Trust me.

And I will be the first person to say that it’s NOT sustainable to show up online every single day without being glued to your phone at every waking moment. ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿป‍โ™€๏ธ ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿป‍โ™€๏ธ

And I don’t know about you, but there are a lot of moving parts to my business.

I don’t have time to spend my whole day on content!

I’ve got places to be and people to see! ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿป โœจ

So how did I make the change toward something more sustainable?

๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป Enter The “Hero” Content Strategy. ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

What Is The Hero Content Strategy?

In short: The “Hero” Content Strategy is when you take one high-value (usually long-form) piece of content and break it down into smaller pieces of content to distribute across multiple platforms.

It means making that initial piece of content work WAY harder for you. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป

After all, it takes a lotta work to make long-form content! ๐Ÿ˜…

Using this strategy makes it possible to show up for your audience consistently and creatively… no matter what else you have going on in your business.

Regardless of how you’re feeling on any particular day, you’ll have well-thought-out content being pushed out while also leaving room for inspiration to strike.

Gone are the days of opening your business on Instagram every day, racking your brain for what to post.

In fact, since I’ve implemented the “Hero” Content Strategy in my business, there are days when I barely touch my business account at all.

But you would NEVER be able to tell because my content strategy is laid out for weeks at a time. ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ โœ…

At the same time, when I’m in a creative mood and I am overcome with the urge to post I know that there is always room for spontaneity within my social media strategy.

It’s pretty much the best of both worlds.

What Makes A Good Piece Of Hero Content?

The first step to implementing The “Hero” Content Strategy is venturing into the world of long-form content.

For me, my hero content of choice is YouTube videos.

โšก But for you maybe it’s a podcast.

โšก An Instagram Live

โšก An Instagram Video.

โšก A Masterclass training.

Just pick something between 10 and 20 minutes that is jam-packed with value.

And if you don’t have anything that fits the bill - the time is now, my friend.

Get on the long-form content bandwagon, cause it’s about to save your life.

My “Hero” Content of choice is YouTube videos because I like that I can then strip the audio and turn it into a podcast.

Which is just one more way to leverage the original piece of content.

But I also know that long-form video content is a lot of work. It can take a lot of planning, editing, and sometimes expensive equipment that we don’t all have access to.

So whatever long-form content you choose, stick to your guns and multiply its impact. ๐Ÿ“ˆ

Here’s what this looks like in my business ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

โœ… I plan and shoot my Youtube videos.

โœ… My team then edits the raw footage into the polish product you all get to see.

โœ… Then that final YouTube video gets transcribed.

โœ… And then it is turned into:

  • 1 blog post
  • 1 newsletter
  • 4 social media captions

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป And I even record short-form video content inspired by these videos for TikTok and Reels while I’m at it.

When I have a great idea for a Youtube video, I do NOT let it go until it's been used in every way possible.

Creative content ideas are hard to come by sometimes so make the best of every single one you’ve got!

Why You Need To Batch Your Long-Form Content

I am ALL FOR batching your content, but especially when it comes to long-form content.

When you’re brain is in the zone for creating long-form content, you need to capitalize on it.

It takes a lot of work to:

๐Ÿง    Familiarize myself with my content outlines/script

๐Ÿ’„   Do my makeup

๐ŸŽฅ   Set up my filming equipment

So there’s NO WAY I have it in me to do that a bunch of times a month. ๐Ÿ˜…

To make The “Hero” Content Strategy work for me, I sit down and record all of my long-form content for the month in one day.

And I don’t stop there. ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿป‍โ™€๏ธ

No way!

While I’m in the zone, I also record two short-form videos that correlate with each long-form video.

That way, once my YouTube video has been converted into captions I can pair a caption with one of my short-form videos, and BOOM I’ve got a post checked off the list. โœ…

Be aware, however, that batching your content for the month does take a lot of work in the way of planning.

You can’t show up expecting to record four YouTube videos and eight short-form videos in one day without putting some thought into it first.

So be prepared to plan out your long-form content in advance so you can reap the benefits of The “Hero” Content Strategy once they’ve been recorded.

One of the greatest parts about front-loading the work in this way is that you can sit back and relax knowing that you’ve got a plan for your monthly content. ๐Ÿ’…๐Ÿป ๐Ÿง–๐Ÿป‍โ™€๏ธ

And I don’t know about you, but when I’m relaxed, creative content ideas come much easier to me.

And because I know that my content is planned out my brain actually has the energy to be inspired to create extra pieces of content when I feel like it.

Whether that’s jumping on a TikTok trend or posting about the latest Instagram update, I feel so much less pressure this way. โšก โšก

Disclaimer โš ๏ธ

โš ๏ธ A quick disclaimer when it comes to The “Hero” Content Strategy โš ๏ธ

I have the privilege of working with a kick-ass team of creatives to make this happen. ๐Ÿงก

I am so, so, so lucky to be in this place with my business. But I know that it isn’t the reality for everyone.

It certainly hasn’t always been the reality for me!

But no matter the size of your team, there are so many ways to implement parts of this strategy into your workflow.

Maybe you're a solopreneur. Start small!

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป Why not go back into some of your old content and look for caption ideas?

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป Start transcribing Instagram Lives to re-visit on a rainy day.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป Or pull a few epic quotes of yours to turn into tweets!

There are truly no bad ways to repurpose good content.

And if you are in the place where you are ready to build out your team and hire a VA or a copywriter, don’t get freaked out trying to deliver them fresh ideas.

Start with what you already have.

Because I’m willing to bet that if you are at the place where you can make an investment in building out your team, you probably have some old long-form content you can tap into.

No matter how many people you have working on your social strategy - The “Hero” Content Strategy has something for everyone. โœ…

So there you have it, folks! The “Hero” Content Strategy in a nutshell.
