3 Tips For Social Media Wellness (That Are Actually Achievable!)

Nov 24, 2021

Does social media ever leave you feeling burnt out?

Do you feel like you’re absorbed 24/7, keeping up with the trends, ending your day EXHAUSTED, only to start it all over again when you wake up?

As a social media strategist, I feel EXACTLY the same sometimes. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

In this blog post, I want to give you some tried and true social media wellness tips that you can start to implement in your life right away.

They aren't fluffy...trust me

Social media is what I do. It’s my job, my career, and my passion. But that doesn't mean that I still don't get burnt out from time to time.

I know as a content creator, as a business owner, and just as a person in general, you can probably get seriously drained from social media. There are some key things that you can do to minimize social media exhaustion while maximizing the impact of social media on your business or brand.

Keep reading to find out. ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

1. Turn Off Your Notifications

I implemented this when I started taking on social media clients, back in the day.

I know probably it's gonna hurt at first because we all LOVE that little hit of dopamine we feel when a notification pops up.

You know, when somebody likes your Instagram posts, when somebody comments on your post, or when somebody sends you a DM. We get it in our brains. That signal of happiness and fulfillment. ๐Ÿ˜

We need to break that habit. Because as soon as you see a notification pop up, you're going to instantly be looking at your phone scrolling social media platforms.

When you're feeling a little bit low, you’ll constantly be looking to get that hit, that feel-good feeling.

I first turned off my notifications out of necessity - I was managing a million different client accounts and having notifications on would totally drain my battery.

But once I made this change, I realized it’s something that I will never look back on...even on my personal social platforms!

The only notifications that pop through for me are messages and phone calls.

Yep, that’s it.

I've turned off every single other app. This means I'm not reaching for my phone every time I see it light up.

I silence my phone during the day too. This trains my brand to not look for any kind of reward or distraction and derail me from my plan for the day.

It STOPS you from doing that thing. You know, when you say to yourself, “I don't mean to look at these notifications… But...”

And tap into that app ANYWAY! ๐Ÿคฆ‍โ™€๏ธ

This leads me to point number two. ๐Ÿ‘‡

2. Allow Yourself To Binge (But Set a Timer)

Listen, I know there are so many social media gurus out there telling you NOT to binge on social media.

But I want to give you permission to scroll.

After all, that’s what social media is all about. Sometimes we need a quick opportunity to shut our brains off.

I used to say, “okay, if you're going to scroll at least be active.”

But sometimes I know my brain can't even do that! I literally just want to binge-watch Tiktok videos. ๐Ÿ™ˆ Are you the same?

I don't even comment on them because sometimes I'm like...this is just too much!

I want to shut my brain off for a little bit.

I used to preach to people to make sure you're commenting and liking every couple of posts. But now, you know what? If you want to do that, do it. If you don’t, then don’t.

You do you, boo-boo.

But what I would like to tell you is this.

Put a cap on binge-watching or set a specific time for you to do so.

So for instance, I try NOT to go on social media apps during the daytime UNLESS I'm logged in for a client or posting. That’s just a rule that I've set for myself.

If I DO want to binge during the day, I try and do so on my lunch hour for 15 minutes while something's cooking in the oven, or while I'm waiting for delivery.

Then, I use my evenings for a little more social media leisure. At nighttime, while I’m cooking dinner or hanging out, I’ll indulge in a little TikTok scroll. The only golden rule? Don’t do it right before bed.

Take the time to enjoy social media for what it is, because when it’s your job, you often forget.

3. You Don’t HAVE To Post 24/7

If you feel super down, you’re not in a good mental space, or have too many things going on in your life, then simply DON’T post on social media.

This is exactly what I did over this last month.

I had so much going on in my personal life and business life that I refrained from posting because I knew that the content that I put out there, would not feel authentic.

It would be forced and it wouldn't feel like me.

That’s NOT my brand.

You are allowed to take a break!

But you know what? It’s not just me either.

I noticed there are so many TikTok creators that I was following that are in similar industries to mine.

They all took a break over the summer because people were burnt out.

So if you don't feel like posting...you don't have to!
