What Content Creation Method Is Right For You?

May 18, 2022

Do you ever feel like no matter how hard you try you can’t find a content creation method that suits you and your unique business?

Do you keep trying a new system one week and abandoning it the next?

Constantly playing content catch-up?

You are not alone 🧡

It’s not easy to find a content creation process that actually works for you, consistently.

Should you create content daily? Batch it all in one go? Keep your ideas stored up for later?

It can feel like there are so many methods, and so many debates about which one is best.

So today I’m breaking down the different 3 ways you can create content for your small business.

Once you've got the pros and cons of each - you’ll be able to settle on the system that works for you in no time👇🏻

In The Moment Creation

First up we’ve got ‘In the Moment’ content creation.

Or as I like to call it: Chaotic content creation. 😳 😳 😳

You’ll see what I mean in a second!

This method is all about creating and posting content in that specific moment. From coming up with the idea to writing the caption, and creating the graphic, all the way up to hitting the post button.

Usually, ‘in the moment’ content is a reaction to something you saw online or in real life.

You feel inspired to make a post and push it out right away.

The Pros ✅

The great part about this method is that you are able to stay current.

You can hop on trends faster than anyone else.

Using this strategy you will always be first to market when reacting to:

⚡World events
⚡ Pop culture
⚡ And even industry happenings

Being the first to educate your audience on new industry trends or events is a fantastic way to position yourself as an expert.

When your audience knows they can look to you right away, it will help build strong brand authority. 💪🏻

The Cons ❌

The main downfall with this method is that it’s nearly impossible to follow a marketing strategy.

Hence me nicknaming this method the “Chaos Content Strategy” 😉

And as an online business owner, your content strategy is one of the best ways to meet business and marketing goals.

So without any structure about when and what you’re going to post, it’s easy to fall behind and get off track.

On top of that, when you only create one post at a time, you may find that it’s not the most efficient use of your time. You’re breaking away from what you were doing before and going into ‘creation’ mode for a single post!

So even though it seems fun and spontaneous - you actually end up frittering away your time and energy and maybe even burning yourself out. 😬

Intuitive Creation

The next content creation method you could choose from is the Intuitive Creation method.

What this means is following your intuition about when you want to make content. ✅

This method helps you pay attention to your creative sparks and use those moments to sit down and create content for your business.

These might be moments of inspiration throughout your day, week, or month.

But the key part is that you only create content when you feel inspired to do so.

And rather than checking off a list of posts you “have” to create – these are those moments where you feel lit up to write about a certain topic in particular.

Don’t confuse Intuitive Creation with In The Moment Creation.

Because while they might sound slightly similar, the goal of Intuitive Creation is to use moments of creative energy to build up a content library.

Rather than In the Moment creation, where you make the content and post it in that same moment.

The Pros ✅

Intuitive content creation is an amazing way to build your audience and nurture a sense of online community.

Because the content you create in this inspired state truly comes from the heart. 🧡

It is often your ⚡best and most exciting work⚡ and your audience can absolutely tell.

The great part about this method is that you are so much less likely to burn out.

Because you are listening to your creative impulses rather than pushing yourself to create.

I absolutely keep parts of this method in my own content workflow.

I call them my little pockets of joy 🧡 🧡 🧡

And using parts of this method reminds me why I got into content work - because I freaking love it!

But there are still a few pitfalls…👇🏻

The Cons ❌

The fact of the matter is, you never know when inspiration will strike.

And I don’t know about you - but I sometimes have long periods where I feel extremely un-creative.

Kind of ironic for a gal whose business is literally called A Creative Co. 👀 👀

Or sometimes creative inspiration will strike but it’s on a day when you have back-to-back client calls. 😫 😫

There are just too many variables and your content creation can quickly become inconsistent!

So while this might not be the best method to help you tackle your marketing goals - maybe try and pay attention to the patterns in your creative energy.

Use this information to help you schedule your content creation time.

👉🏻 Are you more inspired in the morning or the evening?

👉🏻 Are you more inspired at home or at a local coffee shop?

Staying in tune with your creative impulses can still be an incredible way to create content that resonates!

Content Batching

And finally, we’ve got my personal favorite method:

⚡ Batching ⚡

Not only is this my favorite, but it’s also probably the one you hear about the most.

And there’s absolutely a reason for that.

This method rocks. 🎉 🎉 🎉

Batching means that you are going to sit down and do ONE specific content creation task all at once.

No switching gears, just deep focus.

So that might look like

✅ Recording all your video content.

✅ Or creating all your graphics for the week.

✅ Or writing all your newsletters.

But whatever task you choose, you stick it out through to the end of the task to maximize your time and energy.

That way you can sit back, relax and spend the rest of your month focussing on the rest of your business.

The Pros ✅

The biggest pro of batching is your ability to leverage your time.

You’re able to get so much done in a short period of time once you get in the zone! 💪

Rather than breaking up your content creation into a bunch of little stints - you’re using your time wisely, strategically, and effectively.

Think about it this way. 👇🏻

Don’t you want to get as much mileage out of a full face of makeup as you can?

Once you’ve got yourself all dolled up to film a video - why not film a whole bunch of videos?

Our brains work best when we can sink into doing one task at a time.

It’s more energizing and less draining.

Not to mention, it allows you to stay incredibly on top of your content and marketing strategy.

You can plan every post well in advance to hit each weekly and monthly goal. 🏆

I’m telling you - batching is where it’s at. ✅

The Cons ❌

So if batching is all the rage…then why doesn’t everyone do it?

Well as promised - I'll give you the cons.👇🏻

Batching does require a lot of time, energy, and planning ahead.

You can’t just sit down to film a bunch of videos or write a bunch of captions with no strategy or plan.

And while I love to plan (shoutout to my fellow Virgos 😉) it might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

So that’s con #1.👇🏻

Con #2 is that once you have blocked off time to batch content, you might sit down and realize you’re just not in the mood.

But when your content strategy depends on these batching sessions, you kinda don’t have a choice.

So this often means pushing through this feeling of being uninspired and creating anyway.

And I’m gonna be honest with you guys - pushing through can sometimes lead to burnout.

So remember to cut yourself some slack. 🧡

Maybe batching will work for your video content, but not your blog posts.

Maybe you’ll do a smaller weekly batch on TikToks than filming them for the month doesn’t feel doable.

Be realistic and figure out what works for you!

But if there’s one thing to take away from this blog post - it’s to find a way to incorporate batching into your content creation process.

⚡ It will change your life ⚡

If I’m being completely real and honest with you, there is not one single perfect content creation method.

And while my strategy relies heavily on content batching - it’s a mix of all 3!

I stick to my content batching schedule no matter what. 🗓️

ESPECIALLY when it comes to my video content (I did a whole post on my video batching process here).

But in between my batching sessions where I get shit done, I have my moments of intuitive creation that remind me of the joy found in content work. 🧡

AND I also have my chaotic creation moments where I am all of a sudden struck with an idea to post something.

Yes…you will sometimes see me pulling out my phone and making an in-the-moment post! 💃🏻

If you want some help in figuring out what the best strategy is for you I have a course for you to try.

The Content System is my new course for small business owners who want to learn where to create content, how to create content, and how to organize either content.

🎉 And lucky for you, it’s launching soon! 🎉
